A charity supporting young people in Ashington is celebrating double success at an awards night.

Real Deal Plus, which operates from Ashington Life Centre in the town’s former old police station, won two awards at the High Sheriff of Northumberland’s Youth Against Crime Awards ceremony.

As well as an award from High Sheriff Lucy Carroll, the charity was also awarded a Super Partnership Award.

The Super Partnership District Award is a partnership between the Police and Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird, and the High Sheriff, recognising organisations and groups which support young people into beneficial pursuits and deter them from crime.

Teen Bar members Jodie Hutchinson and Josh Plummer collected the certificates presented by the High Sheriff at the awards ceremony held at the Northumberland Church of England Academy.

Ashington Life Centre is open from 9am to 4pm daily, and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays.

Among its services are a job club, online courses, emergency food bank, art therapy classes/art group, a craft club, a teen bar/youth cub, a community shop and two allotments.

The Community Cafe supplies free hot drinks and soup daily, with snacks and weekly home cooked meal specials at subsidised prices.

A Furniture Scheme supports those on benefits or experiencing financial hardship by redistributing donated good quality furniture and white goods at affordable prices.

The Centre is currently in the process of expanding its services to include a public access shower room, laundry facilities and two day-bedsitting rooms where street sleepers or ‘sofa surfers’ will be able to get some much needed sleep and some personal space for a few hours.

Various volunteering opportunities are available which provide experience and ‘on the job’ training – for more details or to apply visit www.realdealplus.org.uk
