STUDENTS at a Blyth school were so moved after reading a book about the plight of homeless people that they decided to try to help out.

Year 7 pupils at Blyth School Community College have been collecting toiletries, creating posters and raising cash for the People’s Kitchen in Newcastle.

Students Fraser Tarn-Chapman and Laura Wear have handed over several boxes of toiletries – including toothpaste, shampoo and hand cream – along with a cheque for £200, to volunteer Maureen Hogg, pictured.

The youngsters have already started collecting more items and are planning a winter campaign, which may include a collection of warm clothing, including socks, gloves and scarves.
