A football tournament honouring an Ashington man is to return following the success of its first year.

Dave White died in September 2014 at the age of 46 following a heart attack.

Family and friends gathered last year to host the Dave White Memorial Tournament which saw Ashington CFC win the Dave White Memorial Cup while Cramlington United took home the DW Memorial Plate.

Ashington Colliers U11s are hosting the annual tournament, which will take place on Sunday, May 22, at Ashington’s Hirst Welfare Centre from 10am to 3pm.

Dave’s father Maurice said: “Dave was not only my son, he was a very supportive dad, who loved nothing more than watching his two boys playing their football.

“Sadly Dave passed away after a sudden heart attack at only 46 years of age, and he is hugely missed.”

Teams from Ashington CFC, Bedlington Town, Berwick Rangers, Burradon Juniors, Cramlington Utd, Ellington Juniors, Heaton Hawks, Wallsend Community and Westmoor Juniors have been invited to play in the tournament.

As well as honouring Dave’s memory, the event aims to raise funds for the Colliers’ chosen charity, Children with Cancer UK.

Last year they presented £450 to the charity and the team are aiming to do at least the same this year.
