Man arrested after body discovered in Choppington house fire

A MURDER investigation is under way after a woman’s body was discovered after a fire in Choppington.

Jacqueline Grant, 48, of Ponteland, was found in the bedroom of the house in Meadowbank Drive on Tuesday, November 29.

Police are continuing to question a 49-year-old man who has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

It is believed the arrested man and the woman were known to each other.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Bentham, leading the investigation, said: “A post mortem examination was carried out yesterday evening and cause of death was determined as ligature strangulation.

“The victim also appears to have been assaulted and had a number of facial inquiries.

“I am asking that anyone who has any information about this crime contact police at once.”
