Still time to vote in first police election

THERE is still time for Northumberland residents to cast their votes in the inaugural police and crime commissioner elections.

Polling stations across the county have been open since 7am this morning (Thursday), and residents can cast their votes until 10pm.

PCCs, as they will be known, will not run the police, but will be responsible for setting priorities for their police force, overseeing its budget and hiring the chief constable.

Northumberland County Council elections manager Mick Miller said: “We are fortunate to live in a democracy, we all have the right to vote and we should all use it.

“Over recent weeks, polling cards have been sent to residents through the post informing them of their elector number and their polling station.

“It is helpful if this is brought along when you vote, but it is certainly not essential, so if you’ve mislaid it, you can still vote, as long as you are registered and eligible.”
