A YOUNG rugby enthusiast from Seaton Sluice has qualified as a referee.

Daniel Emmonds, a Year 8 pupil at Seaton Sluice Middle School, has recently qualified as a Rugby League match official.

Already a school sports leader, he had the opportunity to attend a training course run by Peter Wharton the match officials’ development officer for the north east.

Daniel, pictured, passed with flying colours and was invited to begin his refereeing career.

Daniel helped referee his first game at half-time in the Gateshead Thunder versus Leigh Centurions game.

He said: “I can’t believe I got to referee in a proper stadium for my first ever game. I can’t wait to do more over the summer.”

Community rugby league coach for Northumberland Lee Carbutt added: “Dan has taken part in all the coaching I have done in his school and has constantly asked to referee and was keen to learn the rules.

“Dan has now taken his first steps on the RFL match officials development ladder and I look forward to seeing his progress over the next few years.”
