Engineering a future for apprentices

Young people aged from 16 to 24 are being urged to attend a college event which could help them engineer their futures.

Northumberland College in Ashington is holding an Engineer Your Future apprenticeship event on Wednesday, July 31, and Thursday, August 1.

It follows a recent successful launch amongst local businesses from the engineering and manufacturing sectors that is linked to £11.75m of funding awarded to Northumberland development company Arch from the government’s Regional Growth Fund.

It makes £15,000 available to qualifying employers and has seen several businesses create new apprenticeship vacancies as a result.

The event will see young people sign-up for a two week pre-apprenticeship training programme that the college has created in partnership with Hebburn-based recruitment consultancy Zenith People.

Lisa Mood, employability and business development manager at Northumberland College, said: “As well as benefiting employers with their recruitment and selection of new talent, this Engineer Your Future programme will help young people enormously by giving them underpinning knowledge about the engineering and manufacturing sectors and preparing them to successfully tackle the recruitment process for an apprenticeship.”
