Science students land scholarships

TWO budding scientists from Ashington High School are celebrating after being named among only ten teenagers nationwide to land a sought-after scholarship.

Physics students Emma Whitmell and Thomas Redhead have been awarded bursaries to study materials science, a combination of applied physics and chemistry.

The scholarships are offered by the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers, a craft guild founded in London in 1322, and UK steel manufacturer Corus.

The 16-year-olds, pictured, were presented with the award at a ceremony held at the Armourers’ Hall in London.

Rob Kitching, principal at Ashington High, said: “We are immensely proud of Emma and Thomas’s wonderful achievement.”
