Event aims to bring town to life

PROPOSALS are gathering pace for a major event in the heart of Blyth town centre next month.

Officials at Blyth Town Council, Northumberland County Council and the National Market Traders Federation believe the showcase event while promote the town as a great place to live, work, shop and enjoy.

Scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 23, the fun packed family day out will take place in Blyth Market Place and surrounding streets.

And already dozens of local businesses have signed up to take part.

As well as the traditional Blyth market, there will be additional traders showcasing their goods from around the north east while boosting the retail trade in the town.

There will also be a ‘Play Your Cards Right’ game for shoppers; martial arts displays from the Northern Freestyle Karate Association; dancing from the Donna Kimberley Dance Group and Clann Na Ngael Irish Dance Academy; a display from Empire School of Boxing; a five-a-side football pitch; entertainment from the Time Bandits theatre group, roving stilt walkers and more.

The partners hope the event will bring the town centre to life for regular shoppers and new visitors while also develop relations with residents, local businesses and themselves.

And following a meeting last week, they have approved the artwork based on local landmarks for a series of banners to be erected in the market place over the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, Blyth Town Council is working on the 2011 Christmas Festival, a photographic competition and an ‘inter ward five-a-side football tournament’ which will culminate in a town final.
