Family rescued from Bedlington house fire

A family of four had to be rescued from their Bedlington home in the early hours of this morning.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service were called to a serious house fire on Forster Avenue at 1am.

It was initially believed to be a fence on fire in a garden, but quickly a number of further calls were received reporting that the fire could be clearly seen in the mid terraced property.

Three fire appliances attended from West Hartford community fire station and fire-fighters used breathing apparatus to gain entry to the building whilst tackling the fire.

Four people were in the house and three escaped by a first floor window onto an adjoining roof while a fourth was rescued by the fire service from a first floor bedroom.

Four ambulances attended the scene and all four were taken to hospital.

Two neighbours were also treated at the scheme for the effects of smoke.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental and there will be no further investigation by the police.
