Young tennis stars of the future will get their chance to shine on the courts thanks to a donation served up by a local company.

Rio Tinto Alcan donated £1,795 to Blyth Ridley Tennis Club so it could form a pioneering partnership with Bede Academy.

The cash will enable coaches from the club to hold training sessions at the academy throughout the summer and into 2014.

The donation will also cover the cost of two club members becoming qualified to Lawn Tennis Association coaching standard.

Tom Burn, vice-chairman of Blyth Ridley Tennis Club, said: “We want to see children of all abilities give tennis a go and Rio Tinto has provided a fantastic opportunity for them to do so in their own local community.”

Joanne Hannay, from Rio Tinto Alcan, said: “This is a great initiative which not only provides kids with an introduction to such an enjoyable sport but also provides a healthy option for out of school activities.”
