A Blyth company has secured a cash boost to help potential Olympic stars of the future.

Weir Insurance has obtained £15,000 for the City of Newcastle Gymnastics Academy after putting in a strong submission to the annual AVIVA Broker Community Fund.

The facility, used by more than 1,000 children and young adults, was damaged in the flooding on ‘Thunder Thursday’ last June.

Fund judges were impressed by Weir Insurance’s submission, awarding it the highest funds available for a single project.

Company managing director Karen Weir said: “While the facility has been completely refurbished through the insurance claim, this secured funding will be used towards supporting accelerated learning for some 30 Olympic hopefuls to help them get back on track after their loss of use of the facility.

“It will also be used to train and develop coaches and volunteers whom the facility relies on heavily.”
