Work to attract more shoppers to Ashington town centre is progressing well, officials have revealed.
Earlier this year, Ashington Town Team was established to help rejuvenate the high street.
The group – involving Ashington Town Council, key landlords, large and small shopkeepers, local businesses, service providers and residents – was established following a bid for Portas Pilot status.
And in February the team was able to secure the services of former Newcastle United chairman Sir John Hall as chairman.
Now he has revealed that work is progressing well, with the switching on of the Christmas lights one of the first initiatives to bring people back to the town.
Sir John said: “This is hopefully the start of some exciting times in the town.
“There is major investment on the horizon with the construction of a £20m leisure and community facility and more developments planned.
“I am encouraged by the response of local traders to making things happen and attracting shoppers into town during the vital Christmas trading period and kicking off festivities with a great switch-on is a positive step forward.”
