It was very gratifying to read that Blyth’s shipbuilding past is to be recognised and the Blyth Tall Ships project has received a grant from the National Lottery to do this.
The skills of the workers who carried out their trades in all weathers and at times in horrendous conditions at the shipyard will finally be acknowledged.
The men who worked there always took an immense, quiet pride in their achievements.
Hopefully the project will put an end once and for all certain statements that have been published in the past about the shipyard, workers and the unions.
Sadly, many of the men who worked at Blyth will never see the culmination of the project.
After much suffering, because of the conditions they will have paid the ultimate penalty for working there.
