A garden competition will once again take place in Ashington as it looks to follow on from its success last year.

Chairman of Ashington Town Council and mayor, Coun Lawrence Henderson said there was a unanimous decision that the annual garden competition should go ahead this year to reward the horticultural work undertaken by individual residents in the town.

Town clerk Mike Slaughter added: “The reintroduction of the competition in 2010 seems to have generated a real interest within the community to maintain and enhance the environment and outlook in the town.

“It is hoped that there will be future opportunities for interested residents to collectively work together with the town council for wider events in Ashington.”

The gardens competition for 2013, which is being supported by the local Shades of Green Garden Centre, is open to all Ashington residents, with six categories: small garden; large garden; disabled person’s garden; senior citizen’s garden; allotment garden; public house and commercial property.

Residents are encouraged to enter with the closing date Friday, July 5.

Application forms are available from Shades of Green Garden Centre or from Ashington Town Council by calling (01670) 624520.
