A HEALTH chief is taking the plunge for charity.

Jim Mackey, chief executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, will take part in the Great North Swim at Lake Windermere on Saturday to raise money for the trust’s charity.

He has been training twice a week for the one-mile event – the UK’s biggest outdoor swimming event.

He said: “I function better if I exercise regularly so I try to run a couple of times and swim a couple of times each week.

“I did the swim in 2008 and 2009 and really enjoyed it.

“I’m raising money for our charity as I’ve seen first-hand what a huge difference the projects funded have made to the experiences of our patients, whether this be purchasing a new piece of equipment, creating fantastic facilities for patients’ families to stay overnight or turning our outdoor spaces into peaceful garden areas.”

The trust’s charity pays for the extras which make a difference to patients with money raised going towards improving the hospital environment and buying specialist equipment which are over and above what the trust is able to afford from NHS funds.

In recent years, the charity has funded relatives’ room at Wansbeck General Hospital.
