A programme of free activities are taking place in Ashington to help the over 50s keep active and well.
Hirst Welfare Centre has teamed up with the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Ageing Well programme to run the programme.
The project, called Active Age, involves regular social and leisure activities aimed at encouraging older people to socialise, develop new skills and engage in fun physical activities to help them lead a healthy lifestyle.
Connie Hovsepian, 76, from Newbiggin, attends the older people’s forum in Ashington and was involved in sharing ideas about activities older people might like to see.
She said: “I got involved in activities where older people and teenagers come together to pass on our experience and swap skills.
“It’s wonderful to see the kids grow in confidence. After the classes we all eat together so it’s a great opportunity to meet people living in your neighbourhood too.”
