RESIDENTS of an Ashington street were evacuated yesterday afternoon (Monday) when a man threatened to harm himself.

Police were called to a flat on Myrtle Street in the town at 5.10pm on Monday, July 4, following a report of a man who had turned the gas on and was threatening to ignite it.

Northumbria Police and the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and around 40 neighbouring properties were evacuated.

Residents were moved to Hirst Park Middle School, until police arranged for the electricity and gas at the address to be disconnected and officers entered the property and brought the man out safely at 9.21pm.

A 32-year-old man was detained and remains in custody on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.
