VOLUNTEERS have been honoured for their work.

More than 100 from around the county attended Volunteering Northumberland’s annual presentation event.

Among the winners were Alan Keilty, a long-standing volunteer with Newbiggin Maritime Centre, who was presented with the Volunteer of the Year 2011 award while the Macmillan Bereavement Visiting Service volunteers received the Volunteer Group of the Year.

Alan started volunteering with the old Heritage Centre and remained with the project throughout the development and build of the new facility.

Macmillan Bereavement Visiting volunteers were nominated by their volunteer co-ordinator, Carol Sullivan.

She said: “They are a committed, warm and compassionate group of volunteers who give their time freely, visiting many distraught people who are grieving for a loved one.

“Nominating then gives me the opportunity to let them know how proud I am to be associated with such a fine bunch.”

The event was just one of the ways that Volunteering Northumberland aims to recognise outstanding commitment.
