On Tuesday, August 5, I was taking a stroll on Newbiggin beach where a small group were admiring a little visitor on the shore – a baby seal.
With fur upon its creamy back and large brown eyes, it was cute but alone.
Fearing the seal would be harmed or not survive, a local swimmer adorned his wetsuit and made several attempts to carry the pup out to sea to safety.
The animal returned to shore, as if it was playing a game.
At approximately 6pm the seal did return to the waves and to our relief swam hopefully to its mother.
Reports of a baby seal surfing near Amble a few hours earlier coincides with its arrival at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.
