Hygiene fears at overflowing dog waste bins

An angry resident has hit out at local authority bosses who allow dog bins to overflow onto pavements.

Dog walkers in Ashington have raised concerns around hygiene after Northumberland County Council failed to empty dog bins on a stretch of road popular with pet lovers.

Resident Geoff Down said: “This is what constitutes hygienic bins for dog excreta in North Seaton Road in Ashington.

“This must be against all the laws of hygiene.”

A spokesperson for Northumberland County Council said: “Bins are emptied across Northumberland on a regular basis, in some areas weekly and in others daily.

“Unfortunately bins can become full very quickly, especially if large items have been placed in them, and although we carry out regular inspections, unless they are reported as full, this can happen.

“We applaud the members of the public who have placed their rubbish and dog sacks in this bin and will make sure that it is emptied and monitor its use over the coming weeks.”
