A DIAMOND couple from Bedlington are celebrating 60 years of married life.
Sam and Joan Haley first met when they were 17-years-old at a dance in Newsham.
But Joan had to wait another six years before Sam, who worked in the army at the time, took her down the aisle at St Cuthbert’s Church in Blyth.
They have three children, Lilyan, Terry and Christine, ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
The couple, both 82, of John Brown Court, Bedlington, celebrated their anniversary with a family meal at The Swan Hotel in Choppington.
They were also treated to a surprise party, which was organised by Lilyan at her home Bedlington Station.
Joan said: “We had a really nice evening.
“We had a nice meal with the family, cards and a big surprise party at my daughter’s house.
“When Sam and I met we were just bairns.
“I think I need two medals, don’t I?”
Lilyan added: “They were absolutely overwhelmed. They were really pleased.
“My sister came from Kent and their grandson, who is in the RAF in Cyprus, has just had a baby and we Skyped him so he could join us.”
