Northumberland residents can pick up a free item to help prevent the waste of a much-loved British staple at a Cramlington shopping centre this weekend.

Those who go along to Manor Walks on Saturday and Sunday are being asked to look out for the Loafguards – looking fresh from the beach in red and yellow lifeguard attire – as you can get a Loafsaver bread clip from them.

Loafsavers is an initiative by the Love Food Hate Waste campaign – run by the charity WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) – to try to reduce the amount of bread slices that are thrown away across the UK each day.

Many people can make their loaves last longer by storing them correctly and the initiative is being supported by The Only Way is Essex star Georgia Kousoulou.

She said: “Bread is a daily essential for most of us, so it’s shocking to me how much gets thrown in the bin.

“The good news is there are some really simple changes you can make to save it, like using the Loafsaver bread bag clip, keeping your bread in a bread bin or storing half your loaf in the freezer for later in the week.”

“Using a Loafsaver clip is such an easy way to make sure your bread is fresh, so make sure you grab one.”
