A runner from the county got down on one knee at the end of a marathon, not out of exhaustion, but to propose to his girlfriend.
Paramedic Mark Kelly, 33, from Newbiggin, had carried an engagement ring all the way round the 26 mile course of the Salomon Kielder marathon to propose to his partner Julie Barnes at the finish line.
The pair met at the school where Julie is a teacher and Marc is a school governor.
As Marc approached the finishing line this year, he changed into a t-shirt which read ‘Will you marry me Julie?’
Julie, also from Newbiggin, said: “It was a complete surprise, everyone else was in on it but I was totally oblivious.”
Marc said: “I felt emotional afterwards – it certainly gave me something to think about on the way around.”
