More of Blyth’s heritage was this week removed from the skyline in a move that is hoped will create more jobs for the region.

The shiploaders at the Bates shipping plant are being removed this week as part of the on-going development of the Bates terminal.

The site has Enterprise Zone status and has attracted interest for port use from numerous sectors, specifically the offshore energy sector.

First developments are well under way with the new marine fuels terminal to be operational in the autumn.

Port of Tyne’s commercial executive, Mark Thompson, said: “It is hoped that the redevelopment of the Bastes site will create both jobs and additional throughput for the port.”
