PLANS have been submitted to build more than 60 homes and provide new sports facilities on the site of a former Blyth school.

Miller Homes wants to build 68 properties, three football pitches and parking and landscaping at the disused Wensleydale Middle School site in Dent Street.

The school closed in 2009 as part of the town’s switch to a two-tier education system.

In December last year it was badly damaged when a fire swept through the buildings following a suspected arson attack.

The incident, which was the second suspicious blaze at the school in less than six months, led to renewed calls by residents living in nearby streets for it to be demolished.

Miller Homes held a public exhibition of its proposals in February to ask the views of local people before putting in the application.

A previous exhibition had taken place last November.

A spokesperson for Miller Homes said: “We undertook community consultations in November 2011 and February 2012.

“Further discussions have been held with local residents and pre-application advise taken from the local planning authority.

“A planning submission has been made reflecting the feedback and details discussed within the planning process.

“We are confident that our proposed development, including works to facilitate the football facilities, will have a positive impact on the community and we await the outcome of the application.”
