A PLUMBING and gas fitting apprentice from Linton has been honoured at the JTL Apprentice Of The Year Awards.

Calvin Chisholm was shortlisted from a group of 600 and fought off the opposition to win the fourth year category of the awards, held at the Ramside Hall in County Durham.

But the 21-year-old, who works for Bernicia housing group, narrowly missed out on a trip to London for the national finals after finishing second in the overall best north east apprentice category.

Calvin said: “I am over the moon with the award and I put a lot of it down to being given the chance to work on site and on a number of big jobs, opportunities that others working with smaller companies may not have had.

“The lads on site are great and have helped me to acquire the skills I’ll need for my future career.”

Steve Eltringham, director of property and estate services at Bernicia, said: “This is a fantastic achievement not only for Calvin but for Bernicia too.

“As a company, it demonstrates our commitment to invest resources in all of our staff, not least in our young trainees and apprentices, supporting them and helping them to build careers through apprenticeship schemes and work placements.

“This strengthens Bernicia’s success for the future whilst also supporting and developing the neighbourhoods in which we live and work.

“Calvin has grasped the opportunity and has worked extremely hard during his time with us and it is nice to see him achieve wider recognition for his efforts.”
