Waiting for Video...

HUNDREDS of residents have braved the rain to give the Olympic torch a warm welcome to south east Northumberland.

Young and old lined the streets of Ashington as the flame passed through at 9am today.

Street entertainment kept the crowds amused before those who turned out started cheering and clapping as the flame passed by.

Derek Saint, of Ashington, said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Celia Auld added: “It’s very special that Ashington has been chosen as part of the torch route.”

Another resident added: “I am pleased I braved the weather for this.”
