Bike security marking days

CYCLISTS in south east Northumberland are being offered the chance to make their bikes more secure.

Police officers from Blyth and Ashington will be security stamping cycles at bike marking events in the two towns over the coming weeks.

Crime prevention advice will also be provided by local officers.

The first session will take place at South Beach in Blyth on Sunday at 1pm.

Then on Tuesday, September 7, in Blyth's Keel Row shopping centre from 11am to 3pm.

On Saturday, September 11, a bike marking session will take place during the Ashington Environmental Festival between 11am and 4pm, and at the Paddock Wood and North Seaton Community Centre in Oakville Terrace, North Seaton, Ashington.

Northumbria Police crime prevention advisor, Sandra Kileen, said: "It only takes a second for a bike to be stolen so it is important that we all do our bit to deter thieves.

"Security marking is a really effective way of doing this.

"If a bike is stolen, there is a far greater chance of it being reunited with its owner if it is security marked.

"It is also useful for cyclists to know how to keep their property safe and we are keen to pass on some useful crime prevention advice at these events."
