Builders move onto Cramlington school site – Video
WORK has started this week on a disused school site in Cramlington in preparation for the opening of a new school this September.
Education secretary Michael Gove signed a funding agreement last week with Cramlington Village Primary School (CVPS), the country’s most northerly free school, giving the school’s staff and supporters the final green light to open in just two month’s time.
CVPS is taking over and refurbishing an abandoned school in Bowmont Drive on the east side of Cramlington, where plans include installation of new heating and wiring systems, new security fencing, new toilets, cookery spaces in every classroom and an innovative IT space with an interactive floor and images projected onto walls to create cutting edge “immersive spaces”.
CVPS principal Deborah Wylie said: “We are going to focus on individual children’s needs and interests, and then integrate these into an innovative curriculum with aspirational targets, delivered in a flexible way that suits each individual child. Children at our school will have much more scope to choose where they learn on a daily basis.
“There will be very little whole class teaching in Key Stage 1. For example in reception and Year 1, they will be able to choose to learn either indoors or outside for part of their day.
“They will have access to iPads and our secure IT system will allow parents and children to view their children’s learning and achievement from home, uploading photos and comments about what they see.”
The school is also recruiting a head chef who will take an active part in the classroom, helping children, parents and teachers learn and understand more about cooking food and healthy living. Each child will also have the chance to attend every day an extra-curricular activity free of charge after school.
Work on preparing the school’s ethos, values and curriculum, and then hiring key staff has been on-going since CVPS was selected to move into pre-opening phase in October 2011 – one of only 55 schools approved out of 270 applications submitted.
Some places are still available for children due to enter into Reception or Year 1 classes this September.
