AN appeal to raise the £70,000 a Seaton Sluice youngster needs for a life-changing operation has been given a boost of more than £7,000.

The Delaval Arms Golf Society held their annual Golf Day at Tynemouth Golf Club to help Callum Brown raise the cash he needs to pay for life-changing surgery in the US.

The eight-year-old, diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy when he was 18 months old, struggles to get around and cannot walk on his own.

The proceeds from the day – £7,364.34 – has now been handed over to Callum to help meet the cost of his trip to St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri.

The cost of the op, a selective dorsal rhizotomy, and the physiotherapy needed afterwards is £70,000, and the family are now just £20,000 short of that target.

Callum is hoping to be able to go to America early next year as, by then, he will have recovered from two recent hip operations.

For the fifth consecutive year, the 2012 event was sponsored by Ceramic Tile Distributors of Newcastle and 28 local teams entered the 40-man event that was won by W. Rodgerson & Sons from Seaton Sluice whose team benefited from the change in the weather during the afternoon following heavy rain in the morning.

The presentation of prizes took place in the evening with Callum and his family present, where a prize draw and auction took place.

Speaking at the formal presentation, Neil Rodgerson of the Delaval Arms Golf Society thanked all the businesses, golf clubs and sponsors for contributing to the very successful Golf Day, particularly the main sponsors Tynemouth Golf Club for staging the even

Callum’s mum Sharon said: “Than you so much to all the golfers who went out in torrential rain early in the day.

“Callum has decided to add golf to his list of sporting interests.”

Honorary Chief Executive Officer Barbara Connors-Fowler of Angels of the North, which is the umbrella charity for Callum’s Wish To Walk, said that the generosity of everyone and the support of the Delaval Arms golfers had been magnificent.
