Care home approved
PLANNING permission for a new residential care home in Bedlington has been granted by the council's planning department.
Wansbeck District Council's planning committee agreed to the proposal to construct a 40-bedroom care home on Front Street West in Bedlington, on the former site of the West End Garage.
The brown-field site was formerly occupied by a car sales garage, not a fuel garage, and was initially earmarked for a development of twelve houses back in 2005.
But the applicant decided against the development, and instead submitted plans for the care home.
The site overlooks the Market Place and Front Street, and is situated between the Sun Inn and Bedlington Social Club.
An electrical works unit and detached residential property are also located nearby.
The building would be L-shaped with a two-storey rotunda accommodating the front entrance.
An arched roof design would act as a characteristic feature to break the consistency and offer visual enhancement to the building.
Some councillors raised concerns that the proposals only contained provision for eight parking spaces, but the majority still voted in favour of the plans.
Along with the 40 en-suite bedrooms, the home will offer day-rooms and dining rooms, family rooms, specially-equipped bathrooms, treatment rooms, and gardens.
A hairdressers will also be located on the ground floor, which will also cater for members of the public.
Several objections were received by the planning committee, mainly expressing concerns about the height of the building, and questioning whether or not the building would be in-keeping with the surrounding area.
