Centre sees sharp rise in footfall

A south east Northumberland shopping centre has revealed a sharp rise in footfall – reflecting the growth in national consumer spending announced by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Cramlington’s Manor Walks Shopping and Leisure saw an increase in visitors during December 2013 as its footfall increased by five per cent on the previous year, equivalent to a 5.3 per cent uplift in UK retail sales as reported by the ONS.

Bosses at Manor Walks have reported that the growing popularity of consumers researching gifts online in advance of last-minute trips to the shops, saw December 23 become the busiest Monday on record for the centre with more than 54,000 shoppers visiting.

Visitor numbers on Boxing Day were also up by 23 per cent, with the period between December 26 and December 31 also up by ten per cent on the same week in 2012.
