A COUNTY-based organisation has been awarded a quarter of a million pounds from Comic Relief funds.

Age UK Northumberland will receive £250,000 over three years, to assist the charity in its pledge to ensure that the over 50s in the county have access to essential services.

The funds will be managed across a number of partnership projects that will deal with reducing poverty amongst vulnerable older people, including loft clearances, welfare benefit checks and improving insulation.

Fiona Horsman, head of operational services, has been involved in the bid and is delighted to see it come to fruition.

She said: “We have more than 300 volunteers and over 300 employed staff all working hard to ensure that older people in our area have access to a wide range of support and services.

“The ‘Money Go Round Project’ will put us in great stead to make sure that a number of services protect and help those who need it the most.”

Comic Relief has so far raised more than over £800m since its conception in 1985, and has helped changed millions of lives in more than 70 countries as a result.
