Club makes appeal for members

A club for disabled people in south east Northumberland that started almost six decades ago is appealing for new members to keep it going.

Ashington Disabled Club was formed 57 years ago in a front room in Newbiggin.

An increase in numbers then saw a move to Northumberland Close in Ashington.

But now the self-funding organisation is on the look out for new members to help keep it going.

Potential new members are being invited to join them for chat, bingo and entertainment once a month.

The club currently has members, all of whom have minor disabilities, aged from 30 to 80.

Secretary Yvonne Anderson said: “We are a club for people who like to meet up with friends once a month for a bit chat.

“We are looking for new members as our membership has dwindled.

“As the name suggests, most of our members have minor disabilities and vary in age from 30 to 80.

“Unfortunately due to ill health and some of our previous members moving, our membership is quite low.

“As we are self funding we need new members to carry on.”

The group meet on the second Friday of each month from 7pm until 9.30pm.
