Coastguard on lookout for new lifesavers

editorial image

SAFETY chiefs are looking for life-savers to help patrol south east Northumberland’s shores this summer.

HM Coastguard will be providing cover on beaches at Blyth and Newbiggin during the summer and they are now on the lookout for six new coast rescue officers to help provide the vital 24-hour, 365 days a year 999 response to coastal emergencies.

The rescue teams are integral parts of the UK search and rescue organisation and may be called upon to help at a wide variety of incidents, including searching for a lost child, providing safety advice at the seaside and rescuing people from cliffs or water.

Each team is responsible for a specific area of coastline, has extensive knowledge of its area and is fully trained and equipped to cope with its associated risks in all weathers.

Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and in good health.

They must also be available for training and incident attendance, have a driver’s licence with fewer than six points and live and work within 15 minutes of their home coastguard base.

Full training will be provided, including map-reading, rope rescue and first aid.
