Jez Lowe will once again top the bill at the New Hartley Memorial concert this weekend.
After having to cancel last year’s concert due to bad weather, the event will return this year in a new venue.
New Hartley Victory Club in Meldon Terrace will host the performance on Saturday, featuring local artists including Beeswing and Ann Sessoms, telling the tale of the pit disaster in 1862 where nearly the entire workforce of the village was killed.
Renditions of poetry, song and music all related to the event will be performed including a song specially written by John and Caroline Bushby about the ‘Tally Boy’, who had to identify all the bodies.
Joseph Skipsey wrote poems about the incident and one of his descendants, Chris Harrison, has put music to these poems and will be performing them on the night.
The second half will feature singer songwriter Lowe, who will bring some light relief with his songs, many from the mining tradition and life in the north east.
Tickets are £5 and can be ordered from Dave Minikin on 07967 198430, or from the club or the post office in New Hartley.
The concert starts at 7.30pm on Saturday.
