A BLYTH youngster bought a generous helping of luck to a non-league football club at the weekend, when he appeared as their mascot.
Cory Davison was invited to be mascot at the Norwich v Luton FA cup game by former Gateshead striker Jon Shaw.
The eight-year-old was diagnosed with a severe malignant tumour the size of a plum around his brain stem in February 2011, and became friends with Jon when he was a mascot for Blyth Spartans in a game against Gateshead.
Jon, who now plays for Luton, invited Cory to be mascot – which saw his good luck rub off in spectacular form, as the club secured a 1-0 victory over premier League side Norwich City.
Cory’s dad Steven said: “It is 24 years since a non league team have beaten a top flight team, so it was an incredible game for Cory to have been involved in.
“The players and the fans were so welcoming to him.
“His roots are Blyth Spartans and Newcastle United, but he just loves football, so when Jon asked him to be mascot for Luton he was delighted.
“He will wear in colour shirt, he just likes football as it brings people together.
“Cory met the players the night before and they were saying they would battle for him, and they did and they won.
“Then they were tweeting him after the game saying he was inspiring, it was just a great day.”
The Newsham Primary School pupil is now fundraising for different charities to help other youngsters in a similar position to him.
Steven added: “He’s come a long way since 2011, and now he just wants to raise awareness and raise funds for other children, he just wants to help.
“He’s got a big scan in April, but his consultant has given him the all clear to go abroad, and he’s never been before, so we are saving now to take him on holiday.”
