Cory opens new cafe that aims to keep charity afloat
A BRAVE youngster from Blyth has officially opened a new café in the town.
The establishment, situated in the Maritime and Mining Museum, home to the Blyth all-weather Lifeboat, was opened this week by inspirational Cory Davison.
The eight-year-old officially cut the ribbon to open the new River Café to the public on Monday.
Overlooking the marina, the facility serves home-made meals and snacks, boasts riverside views and displays some of Blyth’s maritime and mining photographs and memorabilia.
Declaring the café officially open, Cory said: “I am pleased to open the River Café as I live in Blyth and the people are really kind and always support me.”
In remission after a long 18-month battle with an aggressive brain tumour, the brave youngster has continuously raised substantial funds for a number of local children’s cancer charities.
He even gave up his Christmas Day to help deliver presents to other young people who were spending the festive season in hospital.
Chairman of the all-weather lifeboat, Barry Elliott, said: “Like many charities, we survive entirely from generous donations from the public so profits from the River Café will not only be used towards the cost of keeping the lifeboat in the water and returning the service to a declared facility once more by the Marine and Coastguard Association, but we can also look to support our local hero Cory, in his effortless fundraising.
“The future of the lifeboat helping to save lives at sea is down to the generous support of the public, so we are delighted to be able to provide a café for people to meet, enjoy good food and discover some fascinating memorabilia.”
The trustees of the charity are also encouraging the public to come forward with more artefacts and memorabilia of their own with a view to open a larger dedicated Maritime and Mining Museum locally.
River Café at the current Maritime and Mining Museum station, on the old tug boat jetty, is open to the public Monday to Friday, 10am-2pm.
