Councils join to promote adoption

Ten local councils are working together to get more people in the region to adopt.

Northumberland, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton and Sunderland Councils are launching the campaign with ITV on January 25.

The advert aims to dispel the myths that often prevent people from coming forward to adopt, and directs people to a regional website for more information.

With over 4,000 children waiting to be adopted in the UK, which includes around 385 north east children, the ten councils have been working to encourage more people to adopt.

Policy member for Northumberland County Council children’s services, Coun Robert Arckless said, “We want to spread the word that if you are looking to begin, extend or complete your family – adoption is a wonderful way to become a parent, for both the adults and the children.”

“We are looking for permanent, loving homes for children who are no longer able to live with their birth families.

“Children and sibling groups of all ages and backgrounds are waiting to be adopted. We welcome applications from all sections of our community.”
