Councils aim to find more foster carers
COUNCILS across the north east are joining together for the first time to combat the rising number of children in care by encouraging more people to consider fostering.
Ten local authorities have come together to produce a radio campaign which is currently being aired on three regional radio stations.
The joint campaign comes at a time when the Fostering Network estimates that around 400 new foster families need to be found in the north east over the forthcoming 12 months to avoid a crisis in foster caring.
The ten councils, including Northumberland County Council, are pooling resources with region-wide media with the aim of attracting more people to the professional role of fostering, while driving home the message that there is no ‘typical’ foster carer.
Coun Lesley Rickerby, pictured, executive member for children and young people at Northumberland County Council, said: “It is encouraging to see local authorities in the north east with the same goal, coming together to encourage more people to foster in the region.
“As a local authority foster carer, you will become part of a professional team with a wide support network.
“You will receive financial support and training to guide you through your journey as well as experiencing the emotional rewards that being a foster carer brings.”
In Northumberland, the council looks after around 250 children and young people at any one time.
However, as more and more children are coming into care, an increasing foster carers and adoptive parents are required to meet their needs.
