A NEW way to borrow electronic books has been launched in libraries across the county.

Free e-books are now available through a link on Northumberland County Council’s library website for all library members.

The e-books are compatible with PCs, Macs and many eBook readers, except the Kindle due to Amazon restrictions, but they can be downloaded directly to iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

Up to three books can be borrowed simultaneously, for up to 21 days, using a borrower number and PIN.

Books that are on loan to other customers can also be requested and once available it will wirelessly appear on the device.

Once 21 days are up, the book will simply disappear so there is no need to remember to return it.

Coun Neil Bradbury, executive member for libraries, said: “While in many parts of the country library services are being cut, we have been able to protect, and improve our library service.

“We try to make sure our libraries offer something for everyone, and we listen and react to public demand.

“Over recent months we have had a growing number of enquiries about e-books and I am delighted that we have been able to introduce this new service to meet the needs of our readers.

“The council has bought around 1,200 e-books and if the service proves popular, it is hoped that this catalogue will expand over time.

To join Northumberland libraries, download a form from.mylibrary.co.uk and hand it in at any library in the county.
