County web service gets recognition

Northumberland County Council has been recognised for its online planning services.

The local authority has been awarded Smarter Planning Champion status by the Planning Portal, the government’s online planning and building regulation resource.

The Smarter Planning initiative promotes the benefits of online working, which coincides with the council encouraging the public to access local council services electronically, through its ‘save time, do it online’ campaign.

Smarter Planning Champion status is awarded for providing an efficient service, supplying answers and information to anyone involved in the planning process.

Officials said the council’s clear and concise, easy to navigate website also proved to be an integral factor in the process of gaining Smarter Planning status.

Karen Ledger, head of development services, said: “It is excellent that we have gained Smarter Planning Champion status, particularly since the council has been urging residents to access local council services online.”

The new status will also allow the county council to work with town and parish councils, to provide them with the skills they need to be able to access planning information online.

Customers accessing the council’s website can submit planning applications, view and comment on current planning applications with access to case documentation, view historic applications, make a planning appeal, report unauthorised development, view planning policies and find out information about the planning process.
