Dangerous asbestos dumped at roadsides

POTENTIALLY dangerous asbestos has been dumped by the side of a road on two occasions by fly-tippers.

Northumberland County Council is appealing for information after asbestos sheets and guttering was tipped near the border with North Tyneside, off the A192 between Earsdon and Holywell, close to Earsdon Plants Centre, on or around August 23.

A second incident was on the weekend of Saturday, September 8, and Sunday, September 9, in Arcot Lane to the south of Cramlington, where asbestos sheets, some painted in a distinctive light blue and red colour, were tipped on and at the side of the road.

These incidents follow asbestos fly-tipping in the East Hartford area on or around July 19, where approximately 20 sheets were tipped along with 30 and 40, distinctive black bin bags with silver masking tape containing asbestos tiles.

Officers are seeking information about both the origins of the waste and any vehicle that may have been seen carrying it.

The council would particularly like to speak to people who have had asbestos waste taken away recently.

Coun Alan Thompson, Northumberland County Council’s executive member for neighbourhood services and highways, said: “Fly-tipping has a number of negative effects, including being potentially hazardous for young children.

“This is even truer when the dumping involves asbestos.

“We encourage all residents and businesses to check the credentials of people offering waste disposal services, and would urge anyone with information about these tips to come forward.”
