Disco aids charity fund

A DISCO organised in aid of a partially blind toddler, has raised more than £1,200 for a leading eyesight charity.

Two Ashington mothers, Stacey Triplow and Janine Baird, organised the recent disco for the Fight for Sight charity to help fund research into Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a genetic eye disease affecting three-year-old Jessica Levinson.

Jessica was born with the condition making her blind and despite treatment will never have full vision.

Stacey, a friend of Jessica's parents, said: "The night was a huge success which went far beyond our expectations, with a large number of people turning out to support us and to help to raise the grand total of 1,285.36 for Fight for Sight.

"We are grateful to everybody that made donations for the raffle and made the night possible.

"Stuart Stocks did a fantastic job of the disco and making sure everybody had a good time in raising the awareness into fight for sight and Jessica's condition.

"She is such a special little girl and we are pleased to do all we can to help."

LCA appears at birth or in the first few months of life and causes progressive deterioration of loss of vision.

Currently, there are no effective treatments available but researchers from University College London say an experimental genetic treatment developed by their Institute of Ophthalmology is proving safe and effective.

Fight for Sight hopes money raised will help fund treatments for children like Jessica.

The charity evening, held at The Elephant pub, featured live bands, karaoke, and fancy dress.
