Duo to take on ultimate challenge

A LIFEBOAT crewman from Blyth will be taking on the world’s toughest endurance test this weekend in a bid to raise money for charity.

The Tough Guy challenge is held every January in Staffordshire, and sees thousands of people push themselves to the limit over a gruelling cross country run and eight-mile assault course.

Entrants climb nets and walls, swim through water-filled tunnels, crawl through icy swamps covered in barbed wire, jump over blazing fire pits and negotiate electrified fences.

Around a third of people fail to finish and hundreds need first aid after suffering hypothermia, broken bones and other injuries.

Michael Brown, who is a volunteer RNLI crewman at Newbiggin, is entering alongside Steve Housego, both work as engineers at Gateshead-based IT experts ITPS, and they have been in training for the challenge taking place on Sunday.

Michael said: “I’ve been training for the past few months by running, going to the gym and swimming in the North Sea, but I’ve got a sinking feeling I should have started earlier, much earlier if I want to earn some bragging rights.”

The pair will split their sponsorship money between the RNLI and children’s charity Children North East.
