Environmental group oppose coal power plan

ENVIRONMENTALISTS are set to drop in to Cambois for a series of events around coal power.

Cyclists and walkers who make up the Coal Caravan campaign group will end their 11-day trip through the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the north east in the village where there are plans for a new coal power station.

The group aims to highlight the difficulties that residents can suffer if they live near a coal plant and also the damage it can cause to the environment.

The caravan will arrive at Cambois for 10am on Monday, May 4.

They plan to hold a day of workshops at Cambois Church Hut, including activities for children, games, bicycle maintenance and action training.

And from 7.30pm at Cambois Miners' Institute, there will by a bicycle powered screening of the film 'The Age of Stupid' starring Pete Postlethwaite.

During the expedition, the group will have visited existing and proposed open case mines and proposed new coal fired power stations.

They will look at communities affected by coal, how to make the transition to a low carbon economy, what lessons can be learned from past struggles and is there an agreement for the future of coal.
