Extra cash to improve home care
THE county council is to receive almost £1m to help people leave hospital and receive care at home.
The investment is aimed to enable local services to discharge patients more quickly and provide ongoing support in their home.
Northumberland will get £959,405 as a share of £150m which is to be used on adult social care throughout the country.
The council’s adult services and NHS North of Tyne Primary Care Trust will put plans forward on how best to use the money to make the greatest impact.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley said the money will be allocated to primary care trusts, who will have the responsibility of transferring allocations to local authorities to spend on social care support.
Coun Ian Lindley, the council’s executive member for adult care and well-being, said: “The council very much welcomes this additional funding and I am pleased this investment will provide an excellent opportunity to build on joint working between health and social care services.
“It will assist the council to strive towards our goal of helping elderly residents keep their independence and best possible quality of life and avoid long stays in hospital or the need to live in residential care when they would prefer to be at home within their community.”
As part of a package of measures in the spending review, the government is providing an extra £7.2bn over four years to councils.

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 09:30 AMDoes councillor Lindley expect us to believe him. This equates to less than 50 pence for every person who needs home care after a hospital visit. Yet another disgusting act of the CONDEM coalition government, who by their actions have shown no regard for the old,sick or genuinely disabled.
