Firm is going extra mile to cut fuel bills
A TAXI firm is going the extra mile to show that electric vehicles make good business sense.
Phoenix Taxis – which has offices in Ashington, Bedlington, Cramlington, Seaton Delaval and Morpeth – has taken delivery of its first electric vehicle and installed three charge points at its head office in Blyth.
The company is hoping to reduce fuel bills with the Nissan LEAF.
The charging points are both 3kw and 7kw posts, being funded by the Charge your Car project – which aims to install a full network of charge points in the region by 2013.
The project was launched in early 2010 after the region was named as one of the first three areas to put in place a comprehensive Electric Vehicle infrastructure, with nearly 500 charging points already installed across the region.
Josey Wardle, project manager for Charge your Car, said: “We are delighted with the way the network is progressing with the support from partners like Phoenix Taxis.
“The fact that the company can charge regularly at their offices will help drivers plan their journey easily and we imagine that the taxis will become a real talking point amongst their customers.”
Phoenix Taxis has also been taking part in the ongoing SwitchEV electric car pilot programme and has been trialling a Peugeot iOn for the last five months.

“The main cost to any taxi driver is fuel, and with prices rocketing seemingly on a monthly basis, EV’s are becoming the more sensible fleet vehicle choice.
“In addition it will help towards our commitment to slashing the carbon footprint of our company.”
“Having EV charge points on site makes the goal of running electric vehicles a realistic prospect and we are excited to have our first electric vehicle on the road.
“On top of this, our site will be open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – making EV’s a more accessible alternative to the people of south east Northumberland.”
