A BLYTH company is marking its 40th anniversary with plans to expand and take on more staff.

Weir Insurance, a family-run business based in Stanley Street, is aiming to achieve a £10m annual turnover by 2016 after recently passing the £6m mark.

To help it hit that target, the company is lining up a recruitment and apprenticeship drive.

Commercial account executive Dennis Hetherington has been appointed to assist with the firm’s ambitious business expansion plans in Alnwick, Berwick and Hexham, setting up new agricultural insurance schemes.

Another new face at the firm is that of apprentice account handler Chris Marsden, 22.

Managing director Karen Weir said: “2012 has been a great year for us so far.

“Our recent appointment and apprenticeship roll-out has equipped us to support customers and businesses in the Hexham and the wider Northumberland area, and we hope this illustrates how we are committed to supporting the north east community.

“There is a persistent skills gap in the insurance sector which needs to be addressed in order to get more young people into the industry.

“Apprenticeships and training have been, and will continue to be, a focus area for us.

“It is vital businesses continue to contribute to the development and regeneration of the region, and the team are really proud of what we have achieved over the years.”
